Endoscopy. A doctor performs an endoscopy (gastro- scopy) examination of a patient's stomach. In this technique a flexible, fibre-optic viewing device is used to examine the inside of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. At the end of the tube is a light that illuminates the inside of the body. The doctor looks through a lens to see the image. Much skill is required in feeding the tip of the flexible tube down the gut and through various obstacles, such as the entrance to and exit from the stomach. The technique is routinely used in the diagnosis of cancer and ulcers.
