Bronchoscopy. Flexible broncho- scope (black) in a female patient's mouth being used to examine her airways. The bronchoscope, a type of endoscope, is an instrument which uses optical fibres and a light source to relay images from the trachea and lungs to a doctor. The view is seen on the monitor at upper centre. Bronchoscopy is used in the diagnosis of lung disorders. Mucus and tissue samples can be taken, lung cancers identified and foreign objects located. Attachments can be used with the bronchoscope to enable it to treat some conditions. Thick mucus and foreign bodies can be removed, growths can be destroyed and damaged blood vessels can be sealed.
