Endoscopy. Doctor and nurse performing an endoscopic examination of a patient's stomach. This technique (gastroscopy) involves inserting a flexible, fibre-optic viewing tube (endoscope) through the mouth, down into the oesophagus, stomach and sometimes duodenum. One end of the tube is being held by the man, and the woman is steadying the patient's head. At the end of the tube is a light that illuminates the inside of the body. The view from the end of the tube appears on the monitor (upper centre). The technique is used to diagnose the cause of severe upper abdominal pain and blood in vomit. It is also used to check for stomach ulcers or cancer.
