Colocolostomy. Surgeon and assistant performing a colocolostomy on a patient with colon cancer. The surgeon is using a hand- held fibre optic camera (endoscope) to examine the patient's colon for signs of cancerous cells. Images taken by the endoscope are relayed to a video monitor (top right). The endoscope carries small surgical instruments, which can be controlled remotely. These will be used to remove the cancerous section of the colon. The two healthy parts of the colon can then be stitched back together. Only a small incision needs to be made to introduce the endoscope, a procedure known as keyhole surgery.
