Endoscopy. A doctor and his medical students use an endoscope to examine a patient. The patient is conscious. At lower left, a TV monitor displays the patient's internal body as viewed through the endoscope. An endoscope is a steel viewing instrument containing optical fibres and a light source. It often has remotely- controllable surgical instruments. This device allows access to internal body organs. In this way certain injuries, growths, or internal disorders, particularly in the abdomen, can be investigated and sometimes rectified without resorting to major surgery.
