Laparoscopy. Surgeon using a laparoscope during surgery. The view through the laparoscope is seen on the monitor at upper left. A laparoscope is a type of endoscope, and can be inserted into a patient to view internal organs. It is commonly used for minor operations, as it removes the need to open the abdomen, reducing the risk of infection and scar formation. Operations are carried out by small surgical tools which can be introduced into the body, and operated from outside it. The most common operation of this type is female sterilisation, where the fallopian tubes are cut and tied to prevent eggs from reaching the uterus.
