Elderly man undergoing an electrocardiograph (ECG) examination. The electrode attached to the patient's chest records the electrical activity of the heart and the results are displayed on the chart recorder at right. ECG aids in the diagnosis of certain heart diseases and abnormalities by providing characteristic "fingerprint" traces. For example, clinical observations suggesting someone has had a heart attack may be confirmed by an ECG.
