Portable ECG machine. Doctor's hands operate a portable electrocardiography (ECG) machine. The machine is connected by electrodes to the patient's chest. The electrodes detect electrical impulses made by the heart during heartbeat, and this is recorded by the ECG machine as a trace on moving graph paper. The trace, as seen, is used to diagnose the health of the heart and to detect heart diseases and abnormalities which produce a characteristic electrical pattern.
