ECG examination. Doctor places an electrode onto a man's chest prior to an electrocardiograph (ECG) examination. The ECG is being taken in order to monitor the health of his heart. The electrodes output to an ECG machine, producing a heartbeat trace. ECG machines monitor electrical impulses made by the heart during each contraction of its muscles and at rest. The resulting trace can be used to detect certain heart disorders, as these produce characteristic patterns.
