Electrocardiography. Female heart attack patient undergoing an electrocardiography (ECG) examination. Electrodes attached to her chest measure the electrical activity of her heart. Heart abnormalities produce a characteristic electrical pattern, which is recorded by an ECG machine onto a chart called an electrocardiogram (lower centre). An ECG is commonly used to monitor the heart following a heart attack.
