Electrocardiography. French paramedic reading a print out from an electrocardiograh (ECG) machine. Electrodes attached to the chest are used to connect a patient to the machine. The electrodes measure the electrical activity of the heart. In this case, the patient has had a heart attack. Heart abnormalities produce a characteristic electrical pattern, which is recorded by an ECG machine onto a chart called an electrocardiogram (centre). An ECG is commonly used to monitor the heart following a heart attack. The French medical emergency service is called the Service d'Aide Medicale Urgente (SAMU).
