Electrocardiogram lying on a patient's bed. This is a print-out from an electrocardiograh (ECG) machine (upper left). A patient is connected to the machine via electrodes attached to the patient's chest. The electrodes measure the electrical activity of the heart. Heart abnormalities produce a characteristic electrical pattern, which is recorded by the ECG machine as a trace on moving graph paper (electrocardiogram). An ECG is commonly used to monitor the heart following a heart attack or surgery.
