Electrocardiography. Doctor with a print-out of a 45-year-old man's electrocardiogram (ECG). The ECG has been obtained with the electrodes that are attached to the patient's chest (lower left) to measure the electrical activity of his heart. The machine at lower centre is a defibrillator to shock a fibrillating heart back into the correct rhythm. An ECG examination can help diagnose a range of heart complaints, such as arrhythmia, coronary artery disease and cardiac asthma. Photographed at the American Hospital of Paris, France.
