Heart and ECG. Artwork of a normal human heart, overlaid with electrocardiogram (ECG) traces showing the electrical activity of a normal heart. Several of the major heart blood vessels are seen across top and down left, as well as the coronary blood vessels on the outside of the heart. The heart is a hollow muscular pump that contracts continuously under a steady cycle of electrical impulses, sending blood to the lungs and around the body. The peaks on the ECG correspond to each beat of the heart. An ECG is obtained by using electrodes to detect the electrical activity of the heart.
