Normal heartbeat. Electrocardiogram (ECG) of the electrical activity of a normal heart. Three of the six traces are shown here. The heart is a hollow muscular pump that contracts continuously under a steady cycle of electrical impulses, sending blood to the lungs and around the body. The peaks on the ECG correspond to each beat of the heart. An ECG is obtained by using electrodes to detect the electrical activity of the heart.
