Breast self-examination. Young woman palpating her breast during a self- examination. Regular checking of the breasts is recommended for early detection of breast cancer, tumours or cysts. A woman should first make a visual examination for changes in shape and surface texture. Then the fingers and the flat of a hand should be run over each breast to the armpit (as seen) to check the tissue more closely for lumps. Early detection and treatment of breast abnormalities insures a better chance of a cure.
