Breast self-examination. Woman examining her left breast for abnormalities. Regular self-examination of the breasts by palpating (feeling) can reveal disorders such as cysts or tumours early. The earlier a tumour is found, the greater the chances of successful treatment. The most common treatment after early detection is surgical removal of the tumour, combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. If the cancer has spread to other areas of the body, the prognosis is poor.
