Heart pacemaker. Chest X-ray of a patient with an implanted heart pacemaker (upper left). External electrocardiogram (ECG) wires are also seen to monitor the heartbeat. The cloudiness in the lungs (light areas) is fluid collecting in the lungs (pulmonary oedema). This is due to heart failure, when the heart cannot pump properly. As a result the heart (lower right) increases in size. A pace- maker supplies electrical impulses to the heart from a battery. They are fitted when electrical signals that normally trigger a heartbeat are faulty. Pacemakers either provide impulses at set intervals or only when a heartbeat is missed.
