X-ray of a permanently implanted heart pacemaker, (left) a device used to produce & maintain a normal heart rate in patient's with a heart blockage. It is a battery operated device with an insulated electrode wire (forming large loop, running in front of the sternum) attached to the area of the heart seeking stimulation; either the lining of the heart (endocardial pacemaker) or the surface of the ventricle (epicardial pacemaker). Pacemakers may be temporary or permanent & they may stimulate the heart at a fixed rate or activate it once it falls below a predetermined rate.
