Treatment of a heart attack in the home: a portable defibrillator machine, manufactured by The BOC Group's Glasrock division in the U.S., is used to rectify the patient's heartbeat. A defibrillator delivers a controlled electric shock to the heart, necessitated in cases of cardiac arrest caused by ventricular fibrillation - the rapid & chaotic beating of the individual heart muscle fibres that prevents the heart from beating normally. Ventricular fibrillation most commonly results from myocardial infarction - the death of a section of heart muscle (a heart attack).
