Oxygen therapy. Her respiratory problems are caused by emphysema, a smoking related condition. Emphysema is a disease in which the walls of the alveoli, the parts of the lungs where oxygen is exchanged with carbon dioxide in the bloodstream, are progressively destroyed. The damage to the lungs is irreversible, so the best treatment is to prevent further damage (usually by stopping smoking). In extreme cases a lung transplant is required.
