Emergency defibrillation. Paramedics treating a female heart attack patient using emergency defibrillation. During a heart attack (myocardial infarction), the heart's normal rhythm is disturbed and the heart can no longer pump blood around the body. This causes a loss of blood flow, which can prove fatal unless the heart's rhythm can be restored. The metal plates on the defibrillator are placed on the patient's chest and an electric current is passed between them via the heart. This can shock the heart into beating normally and help the patient to recover.
