Emergency resuscitation. Paramedics performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a female heart attack patient. CPR uses two procedures to help stimulate the patient's pulse and breathing. Heart massage (cardiac compression, centre) forces blood out of the heart and around the body. An Ambu bag (left) pushes air into the patient's lungs, maintaining oxygenation of the blood and stimulating natural breathing. If an Ambu bag is not available, mouth- to-mouth resuscitation can be carried out instead.
