Caption

Coronary care: nurse giving an intravenous injection to a man recovering from a heart attack in a hospital coronary care unit. The drug is being administered through a semi- permanent "butterfly" valve inserted into a vein in the man's wrist. The horizontal green line on the heart monitor machine at right is an artefact of the photograph's exposure time. In reality, a horizontal green line on such an instrument is indicative of death. In this patient's case, the real trace was something more like the characteristic spiked pattern of a normal heartbeat. Models: Nurse, Angela Coyne; patient, William Farquharson.
