Intensive care monitoring. Elderly male patient lies in bed in an intensive care unit of a hospital while having his cardiovascular signs monitored. The patient is attached to chest electrodes, blood gas monitors, he receives oxygen through a tracheotomy tube in his throat, and nutrients through a naso-gastric tube. The screen in the background (at top) shows coloured moving traces of his vital signs. These are from top: heart rate (green); arterial blood pressure (ABP, red and yellow); central venous pressure (CVP, light blue); blood oxygen (dark blue); respiration rate (white). These vital signs enable the health of the heart and lungs to be determined.
