Cardiac patient being cared for in a cardiac surgery intensive care unit. The patient has bandages and a chest scar from where the chest was opened up for heart surgery. The doctor is placing ECG electrodes on his body to monitor the activity of the patient's heart. There is a pulse oximeter (measuring the pulse and blood oxygen) on the patient's finger (lower right). Tubes leading to his nose provide oxygen to help his recovery. The monitor at upper left is displaying the output from the monitoring devices, including a trace of the patient's heartbeat. Photograped in the Netherlands.
