Hospital care for Beslan schoolchildren. Psychotherapist talking to a 13-year-old schoolgirl who was injured in the Beslan hostage crisis in North Ossetia, Russia. The incident started on 1 September 2004 when armed terrorists took more than 1200 children and adults hostage at a school in Beslan. It ended on 3 September when a series of explosions, exchanges of gunfire, and Russian security forces storming the building, led to the terrorists detonating bombs, leaving 344 people (including 186 children) dead, and hundreds wounded. Mental trauma and other psychiatric problems, need to be treated along with physical injuries. Photographed on 12 September 2004, in the children's hospital in the Rostov-on-Donu region of Russia.
