Tubes of blood prepared for HL-A tissue typing. The histocompatibility lymphocyte-A (HL-A) system is a group of 8 antigens, the most important group of antigens responsible for histocompatibility - the compatibility of cell membranes in tissues. A high degree of histocompatibility is necessary for tissue grafts or organ transplants to be successful. In practice, this requires a minimum number of HL-A differences between the donor's and recipient's tissues.
