Blood and serum samples. Rack of blood specimen tubes in a haematology laboratory. In the fore- ground are yellow serum samples, obtained by separating out the red blood cells (seen in the vacutainers, at back) from blood plasma. The serum samples are to be used in a study on AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), and will be tested for HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) antibodies. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS.
