Apheresis machine. View of an apheresis (blood separation) machine. Here, the machine is used to extract platelets and some plasma from a donor's blood. During apheresis, blood is collected from the donor's arm and centrifuged. The red cells are returned to the donor, while platelets and plasma are collected in a sterile blood bag (yellow, upper right). Platelets play an important role in normal blood clotting. Platelet donations are given to leukaemia patients who cannot produce enough platelets of their own.
