Blood group test. Image 1 of 4. Row of blood drops about to be tested for their blood group. Blood is grouped by its antigens, reactive chemicals found on the surface of red blood cells. The major blood groups are A, B, AB and O. Blood is also grouped as Rhesus (Rh) positive or negative. The group is identified to prevent potentially fatal immune reactions when donor blood is given to a patient. For a sequence showing blood being tested for the 'B' antigens, see images M530/480 to M530/483.
