Testing donor blood for bacteria. Donor blood sample bottle being barcode-scanned by a laboratory worker. The sample bottle will then be placed in a machine for automated tests. A loading drawer can be seen in the background. This is the BacT/Alert 3D system, manufactured by bioMerieux. It uses a range of culture media to grow micro-organisms like fungi and bacteria. Sensors detect colour changes as the micro-organisms form, and the data is processed by computer. This system is used to test blood and other body fluids. Here, cord blood (stem cells from the umbilical cord) and platelets (blood clotting cells) are being tested.
