Blood sample for Chikungunya testing. The Chikungunya virus is an alphavirus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes and causes symptoms such as a high fever, a rash and arthritic joint pain. From this sample (from an infected individual), the virus' RNA (ribonucleic acid) will be extracted, amplified (replicated many times) and then sequenced. This aids research into diagnosis techniques and treatment, as well as tracking any mutations in the viruses. Photographed at the National Reference Centre for Arboviruses and Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers, Lyon, France.
