Blood donation. Supervised session showing a patient donating blood, another resting or awaiting her turn and others eating and drinking. The woman in the foreground has a needle inserted into her arm and the blood has been collected in a bag. Donors lie down during a donation partly to relax them and partly to allow their body to gradually adjust to the loss of blood. About 0.5 litres of the 4.5-6 litres of blood in circulation is collected during a donation. After giving blood donors are encouraged to rest and to replace lost fluid. At top right donors are enjoying the drink and biscuits provided at donor sessions.
