Blood pressure measurement. Obese disabled teenage girl in a wheelchair having her blood pressure measured by a sphygmomanometer on her arm. The doctor uses a hand pump to inflate the cuff around her arm until it stops blood flowing into the arm. The pressure is slowly reduced until blood flow resumes. The reading at this point corresponds to the pressure during a heartbeat. The cuff is then deflated further until there is smooth blood flow, giving the lower pressure that occurs between heartbeats. Blood pressure is a measure of fitness.
