Blood pressure measurement. Woman having her blood pressure taken by a doctor using a sphygmomanometer. This consists of a black cuff seen on woman's arm and a measuring device (not seen here). The cuff is inflated by a rubber hand bulb at bottom right The doctor inflates the cuff and listens to the blood flow with a stethoscope. The cuff is inflated and the doctor measures the highest pressure when the heart contracts (systolic). The cuff is deflated and the doctor measures the lowest pressure when the heart relaxes (diastolic). Blood pressure is an important measure of fitness.
