Placental blood. Nurse holding a bag of placental blood. The blood is taken from the umbilical cord while the placenta is still attached to the body. It is deep-frozen for later analysis and use. The placental blood contains blood stem cells which can be used in bone marrow transplants. These blood stem cells have the ability to specialise to form any type of blood cell. They could be used to treat haemophilia.
