Blood cholesterol testing. Home cholesterol testing card, showing a high cholesterol reading (red). The patient's finger was pierced to produce a drop of blood, the blood was soaked into the test area (upper right) and the result displayed in the form of a coloured stripe. The amount of saturated (mostly animal- derived) fats in the diet is the main cause of high blood cholesterol levels. High levels may result in obesity and coronary heart disease. A reduction through change in diet is required to lower these levels.
