Blood donor lying down, while a nurse checks a needle (catheter) in his forearm that is used to collect blood. This is a mobile blood unit that travels to prearranged areas, such as shopping centres and work places, so that potential blood donors can attend at their convenience. Donor blood is given to patients in transfusions to replace lost blood, for example during surgical procedures or after accidents.
