Blood donor. Female donor drinking a hot cup of sugary tea while holding a biscuit. Blood donors are given a sweet beverage and biscuit following donation so that there is an increase in blood sugar to offset the side effects of blood donation, such as feeling light headed or giddy. Donor blood is given to patients in transfusions to replace lost blood, for example during surgery or after accidents.
