Blood transfusion being given during an operation. Donor blood drips from a bag (top right) into a reservoir (centre) before passing down a tube connected to the patient (not seen). Intravenous (IV) transfusion of blood is given to replace blood lost in an accident or during an operation. A valve at the top of the reservoir regulates the rate of flow.
