Blood pressure measurement. Woman monitoring her blood pressure and pulse with a digital sphygmomanometer. A cuff (grey) is placed around the upper arm, and is inflated to exert pressure on the brachial artery to stop blood flow in the arm. The cuff is connected to a digital electronic device, which measures the systolic and diastolic pressures of the pumping and relaxed heart as the pressure on the artery is gradually released. Digital sphygmomanometers can also be used to give a pulse reading, in this case 73 beats per minute. Although blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day, it is an important measure of bodily health.
