Placental blood being placed in a freezer for storage. The blood is taken from the umbilical cord of a newborn baby, while the placenta is still attached to its body. Placental blood contains blood stem cells, which can be used in bone marrow transplants. The blood stem cells have the ability to specialise to form any type of blood cell.
