Measuring blood pressure. Patient having her blood pressure measured using a sphygmomanometer. The healthcare worker listens to the patient's pulse using a stethoscope while the sphygmomanometer gauge (not seen) gives a blood pressure reading. The inflated cuff on the arm temporarily cuts off the blood flow. As it is deflated, blood flow resumes and a reading of the pressure is taken. Blood pressure is an important indicator of health.
