AIDS hospice. Staff and patients at a hospice for people with AIDS. AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus, HIV. The virus attacks the immune system, eventually making the patient extremely vulnerable to infections. Photographed at the London Lighthouse hospice, UK, which merged with the Terence Higgins Trust in October 2000.
