Linear particle accelerator. This is one end of a linear (straight) particle accelerator. Linear particle accelerators accelerate particles in a straight line, as opposed to cicular particle accelerators, which accelerate them in a circle. This is the LIU-300 linear induction electron accelerator in the particle physics laboratory of Russia's Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. Particle accelerators are used to accelerate particles to produce high-energy collisions. The results help physicists understand the structure of matter and the origins of the universe. Photographed in 2005, in Moscow, Russia.
