Neck fusion surgery. Surgeon (at right) performs a neck fusion operation in a hospital operating theatre. He wears a lamp mounted on his head to provide additional light. He is assisted by a surgical nurse. During the procedure, bone or cartilage is taken from the pelvis (hip bone) of the patient and transplanted into affected areas of the spine of the neck. The surgical team wear full-body suits, including face masks and gloves, to maintain sterile conditions. Operating theatre lamps are seen overhead.
