Endarterectomy surgery. Professor P.Dartevelle (at right) and a fellow surgeon perform endarterectomy surgery to clear obstructed arteries of the lungs. This is an alternative to heart-lung transplant, invented by Dartevelle. He works at the Marie- Lannelongue Hospital in Paris. The technique uses an endoscopic video camera to view inside arteries of the lungs. The patient is cooled and their blood circulation is stopped. Tiny instruments in the endoscope are used to peel off fibrous deposits blocking the walls of lung arteries, due to thromboses (clots) or atherosclerosis. The technique restores patients to a normal life.
