Mole removal. Nurse carrying out minor surgery to remove a mole from an elderly woman's back. Moles are areas of pigmented skin which may be either raised or flat. They are usually harmless, but certain types may become malignant and form skin cancers. Such pre- cancerous moles are surgically removed. Moles are also often removed for purely cosmetic reasons, or if friction causes bleeding.
