The thyroid gland is an endocrine (hormone) gland in the neck, responsible for the production of hormones that control the body's metabolism. A thyroidectomy may be necessary to remove an enlarged gland (goitre) or tumours, or when increased thyroid activity (hyperthyroidism) does not respond to drugs.
